E-Mail Services - Screening Services (Anti-Virus/Anti-Spam)
Making changes and adjusting your Anti-Virus and Anti-Spam Services

Why do I receive messages that contained malicious content with that content removed?

When you use our Cloud Anti-Virus & Anti-Spam Screening Service, your email is first scanned by the Anti-Virus systems, after which it is scanned by our Anti-Spam system.

Under normal operation, in the event of the Anti-Virus system detecting malicious content, it's removed and the message is not transmitted.

If for any reason messages are transmitted, the virus is removed, and a notification is added to the message, as explained in more detail at

There are two reasons for the remaining part of the message being delivered.

1. Unlike spam messages, malicious content could either be sent deliberately from an unknown third party, or accidentally by a known contact. By allowing you to see the sender and subject of the message, you can where relevant let your contact know that their attachment has an infection, or potentially that their computer may have one. They can then resolve their issue and resend a clean copy of the attachment.

2. With the original content removed, the remaining message no longer looks like spam and is not detected as such.
