A recent study by Palo Alto Networks has found that 97% of all security threats sent across business networks came from just 10 applications, many of which were using the SSL security mechanism to obscure their activities.
The study reviewed over 3,000 enterprise networks worldwide, looking at applications in use over the network. It first looked at "social" apps in use, but found that, surprisingly, social networking and file sharing only accounted for a small proportion of security issues. It was internal business applications which proved to be a much bigger problem, with applications like Microsoft SQL and Server Message Block (SMB) rated as some of the largest risks.
Around 1,400 applications were investigated, with the findings that just nine business critical applications were responsible for 82% of all exploit logs.
